Millinery gallery (aka hats)As a part of my college education, and in the endevour to preserve and pass along knowledge, along with the original idea of working in film or stage (which isn't likely going to happen as I won't be able to travel to the USA for work ever again in my lifetime because of the current politics at this point), I took the Millinery certificate course at George brown. For each semester we had to make on average 4 hats, so that's 12 hats! Keep in mind one of the hats we had to make was essentially a 2 part stage so it counts as 2 hats but was turned into one. Materials for making hats can range from expensive wools, silks, and fancy cottons, to simple wire, feathers and the best beads you can get from the dollar store. There's also a few hats that are made with a material called "Sinamay" which is a tree fiber that is woven and starched or sized, that comes from the Phillipines.

Buckram Hat Buckram interior (mesh cotton that's very heavily starched), cotton bias tape woven crown, hand woven cotton decorative band, hand sewn batik dyed flowers, peacock feathers
Fall Harvest Brown wool felt, hand crocheted pumpkins from a local-ish indie dyer, ribbon leaves, cotton lining, petersham sweatband, decorative band, and orange flower, goldstone bead
Tangerine Dream Cotton body, fruit mesh bag, cotton covered button, cotton lining, petersham sweatband, heavy interfacing inter lining for the brim
Wedding Veil Millinery wire alice headband base, duchess satin, embroidered and beaded lace, handmade silk flower, ostrich feathers, tulle veil
Deerstalker hat (from video) Cotton Flannelette, petersham ties and sweatband, cotton lining, fosshape interlining in the brim pieces
Patchwork Witch Hats (from 3 part videos) (part 1) (part 2) (part 3) Heavyweight fusible interfacing, handmade cotton bias tape, lace, ribbon, buttons, glow in the dark embroidery thread, feathers, rhinestone embelleshed button, sequins, cotton lining, petersham sweatband (most materials are for both hats)
Dragon Headpiece Wire interior structure, cotton body over wire structure, wool formed skullcap, petersham binding, cotton lining, elastic sizing band
Poke Bonnet Modelled in part from a bonnet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art - Costume Institute (link to image). I didn't have exact colors but took most of the form and style inspiration from that bonnet found at the MET Fosshape base, cotton shell and lining, hemp cording for interior of cording decoration, mulberry silk tie and bow, synthetic ribbon accent
Grab Bag Fascinator This hat requires a bit of context. The teacher gave us the base form (the black sinamay), in a flat formation, and we were advised we had to make a hat in any design we wanted with the base form given, and the materials in a blind bag. We could trade with our classmates if there was something we wanted for our hats in mind, and I came up with something that feels very vintage. Almost high society late 1940s or very early 1950s Sinamay, embroidered flower, rooster feathers, ostrich feather, elastic band
A Hat Made for the Queen (see video for consept and process) Our assignment this time was "make a hat for someone of note, either alive or dead", so with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, I chose a hat style that she wore quite often in her later years and tried to replicate it as best I could. Sinamay (blue, black, and white), Blue duchess satin, Blue and white mulberry silk, beads, petersham sweatband
